My Go-To Book -- A Linky Party

So here it is. My first linky party! What I love about blogs and blogging so much is the ability to get ideas from everyone and everywhere. Linky parties are my favorite, because they become a veritable one-stop-shop for whatever the topic at hand might be.

And what is the topic of this newest party?? Go-To Books.

I want to know what your teaching Go-To book is. What is that one resource that you couldn't live without? The one book that is above all others?

For me, that resources is, hands down, The First Days of School: How to Be an Effective Teacher by Harry Wong.

It has become my teaching bible. His straightforward approach to classroom management so closely aligns to my own personal feelings, it is as if we were a match made in heaven. From him I got the idea for my Procedure Manual and the practice, practice, practice that we do of said procedures.  I began to see the importance of routine and procedure in developing and maintaining an effective classroom.  This is the book I run to whenever I have a behavior issue in my class, or just want to freshen up on some of my "first few weeks" happenings.  This book is truly wonderful.

Now it is your turn.  Write about your favorite "go to" book on your own blog for your readers to get inspiration and then link that post up here and tell me (and my readers) just what YOUR go to resource is.

  5. I guess my go-to book would be the Words Their Way series. I use them all the time. I'm starting to get into the Sisters' Daily 5 now, though.

  6. I really like Fred Jones Tools For Teaching. I read so many management books after floundering my first year and found this one to be really, REALLY helpful. I also like Setting Limits in the Classroom. You inspired me to write a post about my Management Book Collection.

  7. I love this book too. I misplaced my DVD, but I was training new teachers with my district and they showed him. I think he is so funny and still very relevant. He really helped me when I began teaching.

  9. I would have to say: The Daily 5 by the two sisters. I have learned so much about balanced literacy and how it can work in the intermediate grades as well!

  12. My go to book for the past 5 years has been Reading with Meaning by Debbie Miller. It's a super easy read. It's inspiring and gives many ideas on teaching reading skills. I'm actually having a linky party on my blog about another one of Debbie Miller's books. It's another great resource for any teacher. Come join me!

  13. This is a wonderful idea for a Linky Party! I enjoyed seeing what everyone's To-Go books are. I have 2 books; The Reggio Emilia Approach (not that common) and The End of Molasses Classes (much more common). But books help to keep the focus on The Children!!

  16. Like A Teacher's Treasure, I am a book junkie. My favorites are Nancie Atwell's The Reading Zone, Jim Burke's What's the Big Idea, and Kelly Gallagher's Teaching Adolescent Writers.

The Reading Zone validated what I believe reading should be; Kelly Gallagher uses a lot of personal anecdotes and humor. Jim Burke helps teacher to develop meaningful questions that deepen understanding.
