Pinterest Vent and Currently

I was browsing TpT the other day and I came across something that stopped me in my tracks.  Someone (who shall remain nameless) took my Calendar Math template...which you all know I LOVE and have used for YEARS...moved a few things around and was selling it as her own.  I really, honestly, could not believe it.  It made me sad and mad all at the same time.

So, what did I do?  Well, I contacted her.  I asked her to please remove the product from her store as that is essentially MY product.  She responded that she was looking on Pinterest and had seen several pictures of Calendar and "adapted it" then put it up. (she was apologetic, did take it down for now, but she did say that when she tweaks it a bit more she will put it up again... :\)

And here I am at my point.  What you see on Pinterest comes from PEOPLE.  Actual, real people who have put their hard work online to share with you for your own classroom.  Most of what you see, especially education related pins, comes from TEACHER BLOGGERS who have written about it on a blog.  So even if you haven't read the blog, that pin did come from somewhere.  It is not free game from the land of make believe.

I know that many, many, many of us (myself included) are inspired daily by Pinterest.  I take what I see there, follow the link (or not) and use the ideas in my classroom.  BUT if you are planning on selling on TpT, please look back and see if what you have taken from Pinterest is actually already a product.  Pinterest is made up of real people...it is not a person itself.  So when you say, "I found it on Pinterest", just think about the person behind it.

And now that I am off my soap boxy tangent....here is what I am doing Currently.  Thanks to Farley from Oh Boy, 4th Grade for the linky!

This year will be a year of change for me.  I am determined to change my attitude, my body, my relationships....everything will be about a new, positive, happy me! (which will then translate into a new, positive, happy everything!)

What are you doing Currently?

(ETA:  For those of you who are wondering, my daughter's appointment went FANTASTICALLY!  Her little heart is doing great!)

  1. Ugh, how frustrating. Your calendar math is amazing. I'm surprised that she/he was not very receptive when you contacted them. I would be upset too!

Cheers to a better 2013! May it bring you rest, relaxation...and change!

    1. Thanks Allison. She has a heart condition, that we just have to monitor. We go to the specialist once a year and I get a bit nervous each time! I am sure things are fine, but you never know.

  4. Wow, that is pretty disheartening that that person did that and wouldn't even take it down. Luckily I haven't run into that yet. Hope 2013 is a great year for you.:)

  5. Happy 2013! I think if she puts it back up, even after "tweaking it", and continues to sell it, you should contact TpT and tell them about it. I LOVE your calendar math (and so do my students!) and can't imagine how frustrated you must have felt when you saw someone had basically stolen it and sold it as their own :( Hopefully you get it sorted out.

Also good luck to your daughter for her appointment!

  6. I agree with Raye. If, when she puts the product back on TpT, it still is your basic product then I would contact them. I am an avid TpT shopper and I would not want to think that I was buying a product that someone had ripped off someone else. Your frustration is valid and I hope she listens and understands why it was wrong what she did.

Sending good thoughts to you and your daughter tomorrow!

    Happy New Year!

  7. I am so sorry that happened to you. I love Pinterest, but you are right it just a quick way to find what other PEOPLE have already created. Do we as educators not teach against plagarism? This is the same thing.

  9. Just found you over at Farley's! I am so loving The Walking Dead too. I am not usually a huge Sci-Fi fan, but the hubs is and he got me addicted. I am always afraid to watch it when he's not here...I know...I'm a big baby. But it's awesome and creepy at the same time! Just started following you. Love finding new blogs!

  10. ugh, I"m sorry this happened to you Stephanie. This is the part about Pinterest I do not like at all.

I hope your new year is off to a great start and that everything goes well at your daughter's appointment tomorrow.

  11. Sorry, Stephanie. That sucks...I used to say "Pinterest-inspired", but I've knocked that word out of my vocabulary. I'll start encouraging people to say "blogger-inspired" instead. A blogger comes up with ideas...not Pinterest.

    1. It really is amazing. Netflix it and you will be hooked. We were late in the game for it, but immediately became diehard fans after we watched the first season.

  20. I'm sorry that you had to deal with people taking things and passing them off as their own. I'm always so paranoid whenever I make or do things that I saw something similar out on the blogging world, forgot about it and then made something too similar.

Speaking of your calendar math, I have to print it out your post and pass it along to my friend. She'll LOVE it. It is a brilliant idea and inspired me to tweak my Tech Daily Warm Ups so I wasn't doing so much work all the time.

  22. Stephanie, I'm terribly sorry to hear about your run in with plagarism and having it blamed on "Pinterest." That is totally small-minded of the other professional and I hope that the reality of what she did really sinks in. Thank you for your resources. They really pushed my first year of teaching to excellence-your root words memory game and your reading logs transformed our comprehension skills so much! This year I direct a Community Learning Center and my 5th grade teacher and I were just brain storming about getting students to remember multiplication facts. I was perusing your blog and sent her the link to your recent multiplication post and explained to her how inspiring your blog has been to me. Thank you for what you do and I hope this sad incident doesn't ruin your trust in "us!" We love you and are grateful!
