Room 6 Right Now

So we have been in school a few weeks now, and I thought I would share some photos of my room with you.

Now, keep in mind that this is the beginning of the year.  There really isn't much up (if you remember my Open House pictures, you will look at this and think...WOW, she really has slacked on the work this year...but we are just getting started ;))

Here is the view from the back of my room.  There is seating for 32 students (you can see 24 seats here).

This is my rug area.  I am utilizing it SO much this year.  I have started to do a language arts rotation, similar to what I do in math workshop.....so we are CONSTANTLY on the rug.  BEST.INVESTMENT.EVER!

I have Poem of the Week back up and running, you can see my library, and here is the What Are You Reading Board.  Quite a busy corner here!

We have done a bit of work so far. Click on the picture to go to the description of the lesson.

teaching in room 6 blog, columbian exchangeI am super excited about my dedicated Calendar Math board!!!  I haven't had one of these in YEARS and I am so excited to have it back.  Yay!

blogging, teaching, upper gradesAnd here is my desk.  I know what you are thinking...where is the desk???  Well, I just didn't want it.  I wanted the space for the rug, and now that I have my stuff neatly in this cute little tool box, I am good to go with out the big, bulky desk!  The organization of it all is still a work in progress, but I am loving my deskless space so far!
So there you go.  Just a few pictures of my space in Room 6.  So far, I am happy with how it is laid out.  But like I said, it is a work in progress.....I can't wait to see how it changes over the year!

Have you done anything new or different with your space this year??

  1. The yellow, gray, white, & black color scheme is one of my favorites!

    1. I think I am still getting used to it. I like it, but I had these grander visions in my head. Not sure what the "missing" piece it. Will have to work on it as the year goes on to see what isn't quite right yet.

  2. Looks great. I have a small table as a desk...if I had a regular desk it would be stacked high. with a small table most of the junk goes home with me.

  3. How are you setting up your ELA rotations? I am interested in doing something similar so I can do more small group work and reach everyone at their level! I'd love to hear ideas of how someone else sets it up.

    1. It is still in its infancy, but I am doing it (for now) just like I do math rotations. Like, almost identical. Read that post (linked above) and it will give you some idea. The task and WHAT I am teaching is different, but the idea is the same.

  4. I love my rugs, but do wish I had a large one like yours! My easel is by far the best investment I have made for this year. I also do not have a true teacher desk, just some clear plastic drawers and when I need a space to work on something for me I simply use my small group table. Teacher desks are so overrated!

  6. 32 students! (insert shocked face) I have 28 and I can't imagine adding 4 more. I love your non-desk. A teacher tool box is essential to not having a desk, in my opinion. (I might be biased since I made one of those this summer.) Good luck staying organized and enjoy the rug!

  7. I love it Stephanie!!! The toolbox has been a huge space-saver for me too and I love not having a desk! One of the biggest changes I made in my room this year was to move my class library into the open closet door spaces I have in the room. It was kind of a dead space before and now it is a nook for the kids to browse and read. I really have to get going and take pictures soon! :)

I can't wait to read all about your class happenings this year!

  8. It's looking fabulous, Steph! Every time I look at pics from your blog I am more and more convinced I have to try those bulletin board borders, and find myself some of those T-pins. I LOVE the 3D aspect of the boards.
I really should get rid of my teacher desk - but I'm afraid I would start piling things on the floor. ;) Where do you do your planning during prep time?

    1. What is this "prep time" you speak of?? ;) We don't have that, other than the 20 minutes we are supposed to be at school before the bell and 10 minutes after. Otherwise, the planning all takes place at my home :)

  9. I spy your CUTE TOOL BOX!!! Your room is GREAT!!! Wow at your numbers! I'm lucky this year... 21 is my largest class! 18 is my smallest! Love how organized everything is.

    1. Thank you Ann Marie! I actually do have a smaller class this year than everyone else, but 32-34 in the upper grades is pretty standard around these parts.
